John and Jackie Gioia at the Band Stand in 2020

Friday, July 24, 2020

Village Folks:

Thanks for complying with the COVID-19 protocol when you come into Village Hall. Lots of people are coming in to get permits for Donahue Memorial Park. With my desk near the receptacle for the drop-box, I can hear items being deposited and know that the drop-box has become an easy way to pay bills 24/7.

The next Bandstand Concert is at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 28, and it features the village’s very own duo, John and Jackie Gioia. They play folk rock and often perform in the village and the Town of Cornwall. They entertained online for the Cornwall Independence Day Celebration and they helped usher in the holiday season at the village tree lighting ceremony at the bandstand in December.

Lots of people have attended the first three concerts. The grounds at the village bandstand are tight, however, so as we continue to deal with COVID-19, it is important to wear a mask when you can’t social distance.

Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a statement Tuesday that bars are still not open. You can have alcohol only when you’re dining. Please keep that in mind when you’re attending one of the village’s restaurants. The governor shut down four restaurants in New York City and Long Island this week because patrons were not complying with social distancing, or wearing a mask when they couldn’t social distance.

The Village Board combined its work session and business meeting in July and will do so again in August.

Village Folks:

So, Village Hall has continued to run smoothly since we re-opened our doors on Monday, July 6, and visitors have complied with safety plans. The drop-box is always available to pay bills 24/7, located on the drive-through side of Village Hall.

The next Bandstand Concert is at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 21; it features The Drizzle, a quartet playing funk, soul and R&B. Lots of people at the first two concerts. Please wear a mask when you can’t social distance.

The Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson got a reminder about the 2020 census this week. The village is doing well at just over a 67% response rate but we are far from 100%. If you have internet access, you can respond here: https://my2020census.gov/login. If you don’t have the census mailer, you can go here: https://my2020census.gov/app/intro/state. If you prefer to respond by phone, or have questions, call: 844-330-2020.

The Village Board is combining its work sessions and business meetings in July and August. The July 20 Business Meeting will be held via teleconference.

Village Folks:

The Mid-Hudson Region entered Phase 4 of Governor Cuomo’s re-opening as of Tuesday, July 7. Phase 4 includes opening outdoor arts and entertainment to 33% percent capacity, and professional sports without fans. Amusement parks, bowling alleys and movie theaters still are closed.

Village Hall re-opened its doors Monday, July 6. We’ve seen a bunch of people come in to get riverfront permits and to pay water bills. Visitors have complied with safety plans and proceedings have gone smoothly. The drop-box remains a convenient way to pay bills 24/7.

It was great to see lots of people at the bandstand Tuesday, July 7, for the first summer concert. The next concert features Midnight Slim & Laurieanne at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 14. Please honor social distancing and wear a mask when you can’t.

Thanks to the Public Works Department for dealing with the torrential thunderstorm Wednesday, July 8. The village received more than four inches of rain between noon and 3:30 p.m. and experienced extensive flooding. Thanks also to Storm King Engine for pumping out some basements.

The Village Board will combine work sessions and business meetings in July and August. The July 20 Business Meeting will be held via teleconference.

Village Folks:

Good to see some more activity in the village this week as the Mid-Hudson Region entered Phase 2. Lots of diners eager to dine out enjoyed dinner outdoors at our restaurants: Painter’s, Peppetini’s, Rock Wall and Village Pizza. Please support them; they are important to the village, in more ways than one.

Governor Andrew Cuomo extended the deadline for the Cornwall school district and the Cornwall library elections till Tuesday, June 16. They must be mailed to the school district’s administration building (the former library building) at 4 Idlewild Avenue, Cornwall-on-Hudson.

The New York State Department of Health issued COVID-19 guidelines for summer camps. The guidelines are extensive. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that the village can proceed with its Summer Recreation Program.

The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum will open Saturday and Sunday, June 20 and 21. Registration is required: www.hhnm.org/grasshoppergrove.

Village Folks:

So, the Mid-Hudson Region has met the seven benchmarks required by Governor Andrew Cuomo to start moving out of the COVID-19 pause. We began reopening with Phase I of four phases on Tuesday, May 26. Phase 1 includes: construction; agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting; retail (curbside and in-store pickup/drop-off); manufacturing; and wholesale trade.

The latest COVID-19 casualty is the Village’s own Firemen’s Fair. Thanks to Jeff Armitage and the Storm King Engine crew for their efforts in producing the much-loved community event through the years. So, we look forward to 2021 fair. As Jeff says, “You won’t want to miss it.”

The Village Board is waiting for guidance from the New York State Department of Health regarding summer camps. So, we still don’t know whether we can proceed with the Village’s Summer Recreation Program.

Village Hall doors remain closed at least through Monday, June 15. When we do re-open, you will see newly installed counter windows in the lobby to protect visitors and staff. The Village continues to hold its meetings virtually. You can contact us at 534-4200 or [email protected]. Our website is www.cornwall-on-hudson.org.

The Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, right on Hudson Street in the Village, can always use volunteers (845-534-5344). The Food Bank supplies food pantries all over the Hudson Valley to feed the hungry. It’s essential work.

As we move forward, please continue to respect CDC guidelines: Maintain six feet between people and wear a mask when you can’t.

Village Folks:

As Governor Andrew Cuomo gradually opens New York State from COVID-19 restrictions, it’s still important to comply with safety protocol, maintaining six-feet between people and wearing masks when you can’t.

Village Hall doors will remain closed at least through Monday, June 15. We are installing counter windows in the lobby area to protect visitors and staff. We held a virtual business meeting this past Monday and will continue to hold meetings virtually. Contact us at 534-4200 or [email protected]. Our website is www.cornwall-on-hudson.org.

The Village Board has been discussing the Summer Recreation Program. At this time, we don’t know whether we can proceed.

The Village Department of Public Works did a great job in handling a very bulky cleanup this past week. Thanks!

And the Village Police Department has been doing a fine job taking care of visitors to Storm King Mountain and Donahue Memorial Park. Thanks!

Please continue to support Village restaurants by ordering take-out meals: Painters, Pepettini’s, Rock Wall and Village Pizza.

Enjoy your weekend. Memorial Day is Monday. While there will be no parade this year, the Cornwall American Legion will hold a brief ceremony at the Veterans Memorial triangle. Let’s pause to remember those who have given their lives to preserve our freedom.
