Friends & Neighbors,
Our Firemen’s Fair has been a summer staple in the community for the past 69 years. Generations of our community have celebrated the summer season each year by partaking in the food, games, rides and all that the fair has to offer. For some who have attended as a child, they now relive that experience with their own children or even grandchildren. The celebration has continued without hesitation despite the many obstacles that have presented themselves over the course of all these years.
The COVID-19 Pandemic has forced the cancellation or modification of many traditional spring and summer events in our community such the Memorial Day parade, River-Fest, High School graduation, and our community’s customary July 4th celebration. Unfortunately, our Firemen’s Fair is no different.
It is out of an abundance of caution and concern for the health and well-being of each and every member of the greater Cornwall-on-Hudson area that we must announce the cancellation of this year’s edition of our Firemen’s Fair. After careful and thoughtful collaboration with our partners, who assist us each year with its presentation, we found that there was no alternative other than its cancellation.
We thank the Cornwall School District, Shamrock Shows, our local first responders, Village employees, Village Officials, the many businesses and you, our friends and neighbors, that have supported our Summer Fair each and every year. Without this support, we would not be able to conduct this event each year.
So, we ask that you all mark your calendar for the 71st Edition of the Annual Storm King Firemen’s Fair to take place July 21 -24, 2021. We promise that you won’t want to miss it.

“100% Volunteer – Serving our Community Since 1868”
Dear Neighbor,
2020 was certainly a year to be forgotten for all of us. The COVID pandemic wreaked havoc on our entire country, state, and community. Through it all our fire company continued to meet the emergency needs of its residents whenever called upon. Alas, there is light at the end of the tunnel. As the COVID vaccine continues to be administered on a daily basis, our community has begun to regain some normalcy as part of our daily lives. With this in mind and as summer approaches we are happy to announce that we will once again host the 70th edition of our Annual Summer Firemen’s Fair July 21st thru July 24th this year on the grounds of the Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School. This year’s fair promises to be very special in light of what we have all collectively faced this past year.
You will begin to see our advertising signs in the area beginning on or about July 1st. Set-up will begin Saturday July 17th with opening night of the fair on the 21st. The start time on Wed., Thur., and Fri. will be 6pm and closing time each night is 11pm. The final day of the fair, Saturday, will open at 4pm and close at 11pm following our grand fireworks display. We will host area summer camps on Wed. and Thur. between 9am and 1pm. Each night of the fair will include the typical carnival rides, games of chance, food and live music. Break down and clean- up will take place on Sunday July 25th with carnival ride removal from the grounds continuing for a couple of days thereafter.
While this annual summer event is much anticipated and enjoyed by the vast majority of our community, it can present some minor inconvenience and disturbance to some in our village. Particularly for residents such as you who reside in close proximity to the fair grounds. We do not this lightly and appreciate your understanding and cooperation. With this in mind, we would like to provide you the following contact information should you have any questions or concerns regarding this year’s fair. You may feel free to contact either of us.

Village Folks:
So, the Mid-Hudson Region has met the seven benchmarks required by Governor Andrew Cuomo to start moving out of the COVID-19 pause. We began reopening with Phase I of four phases on Tuesday, May 26. Phase 1 includes: construction; agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting; retail (curbside and in-store pickup/drop-off); manufacturing; and wholesale trade.
The latest COVID-19 casualty is the Village’s own Firemen’s Fair. Thanks to Jeff Armitage and the Storm King Engine crew for their efforts in producing the much-loved community event through the years. So, we look forward to 2021 fair. As Jeff says, “You won’t want to miss it.”
The Village Board is waiting for guidance from the New York State Department of Health regarding summer camps. So, we still don’t know whether we can proceed with the Village’s Summer Recreation Program.
Village Hall doors remain closed at least through Monday, June 15. When we do re-open, you will see newly installed counter windows in the lobby to protect visitors and staff. The Village continues to hold its meetings virtually. You can contact us at 534-4200 or [email protected]. Our website is www.cornwall-on-hudson.org.
The Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, right on Hudson Street in the Village, can always use volunteers (845-534-5344). The Food Bank supplies food pantries all over the Hudson Valley to feed the hungry. It’s essential work.
As we move forward, please continue to respect CDC guidelines: Maintain six feet between people and wear a mask when you can’t.
Enjoy your weekend. Stay Healthy!

Mayor’s Message ALERT [Village Flag Protocol Update Edition]:
Dear Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson residents, visitors, and friends,
On Wednesday, I posted a “Mayor’s Message” that, in part, addressed my decision to follow the stated protocols of the 119th Congress and the House of Representatives, as well as various state governments, in briefly re-raising Village flags during the thirty-day prescribed mourning period for President Carter. What I felt was a reasonable accommodation decision was arrived at with considerable reflection and introspection – related to how polarized this country currently is and how any/every decision seemingly must be filtered through the partisan political prism of what one’s “tribe” prefers. As your mayor for the past four years, I have never made ANY decision subject to politics or “optics.” What continually guides me is what I feel is right, just, and fair. Fairly liberating not being career politician. Promised our community to only seek two terms.
While many understood and supported this accommodation to honor President Carter -- and yet apply a brief exception to policy by re-raising of Village flags to full-mast position to celebrate uniquely American transfer of power in Republic -- others reacted on social media with apoplexy over my decision. It was MY decision, and I own it. But I’m also the guy with the desk nameplate that reads: “Help Me Get to Yes.” No, it wasn’t the threats I received from obvious partisans incapable of accepting the results of the 2024 election and who literally hate the president-elect. It also wasn’t the vocal minority of opponents, some who retreated to Reddit to gin up a petition, in vain attempt to alter Village policy. We live in a wonderful democratic society and I serve ALL of you – not only the ones who support my positions. Our community deserves an advocate and seeks to have individual voices heard. Yet, may happen, as General Colin Powell so aptly put it, that “[b]eing responsible sometimes means pissing people off.”
As I further researched, I determined exists precedent. President Harry S. Truman passed away on December 26, 1972. He was afforded customary 30-day presidential mourning period replete with U.S. flags ordered to half-mast position. This included inauguration ceremonies for President Richard M. Nixon’s January 20, 1973, swearing in on Capitol Hill [see attendant photograph]. I certainly understand that much of the anger at my original decision is rooted in partisanship. No amount of explaining reasoning behind my decision will assuage rabid ideologues and those who adhere to their orthodoxy that ignores frailties in their “tribe,” while eagerly pointing out faults in their political opponents. As I write this, no less a Trump opponent than Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) just directed California’s state flags to be re-raised in honor of inauguration. However, I direct our Village keeps its flags at half-mast position on Monday, January 20th. Isn’t a victory for partisans. It’s – in my mind – the right thing to do now.

Dear Cornwall-on-Hudson residents, neighbors, and friends:
One of the things I am supremely proud of as an elected leader is fact that our Village Board and the Cornwall Town Council seek to find ways to better collaborate and jointly improve our greater Cornwall community. That said, Town Supervisor Wojehowski asked me to share this conjoined NY Forward grant application effort with Village residents.
NY Forward is a new State-funded program that provides support for the revitalization of New York State’s smaller and more rural communities in order to reinvigorate local and regional economies by creating vibrant downtown destinations, all while preserving the unique characteristics of each individual community. What an honorable pursuit!
Via this NYS program, we have the unique opportunity to secure up to a $4.25 Million grant to be split equally between the Town of Cornwall and the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson. As part of our continued, joint effort to serve our community’s diverse needs, we know how critical it is to include you – our community stakeholders -- in this process.
The more input we receive from the community, the better we can craft efforts designed to make greater Cornwall the most desirous place to live, work and raise our families. Although we will be prioritizing those initiatives that are most important to our community, we will seek to ensure that ALL submitted offered ideas are fairly evaluated and considered. Even if ideas do not meet NY Forward’s requirements, we will be sure to appraise the shared feedback as part of our ongoing community development efforts.
The following survey should take no more than 10-15 minutes to complete, dependent upon the amount of ideas and feedback you elect to provide. Please respond to these survey questions with 1-2 sentences where possible.

Thank you, in advance, for your participation and feedback! Have a great weekend, all.
On behalf of the Village Board,
Mayor James A. “Jimmy” Gagliano
